Multi-state celebrity bird: the Indian Roller
Widely distributed across the Indian Subcontinent, this beautiful resident bird has been chosen as a State Bird of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Karnataka and Telangana states in India.
The Indian roller is very common across the country and associated with legends. It is said to be sacred to Vishnu, and used to be caught and released during festivals such as Dussera and Durga Puja in olden days. A local Hindi name is neelkanth, meaning “blue throat”, a name associated with the deity Shiva(who drank poison resulting in the blue throat).

In the picture: This image was taken during a jungle safari in the state of Karnataka. It is rightly said that almost always only the unexpected happens in the wild! For instance, this bird just decided to sit so close and calm on a near by branch that I couldn’t believe my eyes! You would see that the legs and the tail of the bird are not part of the image, not that the image was cropped but because it was too close for my lens to get a full picture of the bird.. 😀
