Most of you generalise us as insects. However, some of you address us with English names such as caterpillars/flies/ants/butterflies etc.,.. And the scientists amongst you complicate this further, and address us with some weird Latin names from the past..
Well in the natural world, we have a real name – ‘Prey’. For us, life is just a reason, but our purpose is beyond.
Look at this Himalayan bulbul for example (yes, the same guy with spike hair in the image). He barely weighs 30 grams but just can’t stop eating:
The skinny ‘Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush’ with a catch many times it’s beak size:
The elusive master mimic ’Eurasian Jay’:
And let’s not even talk about the bee-eaters toss and that cruel butcher bird (what you guys refer to as Shrikes) etc.
Oh come on, you hardly know anything about us. We are undoubtedly the most diverse group of animals on the planet (more than a million described species known to you), representing more than half of all known living organisms that is. By the way, we represent more than 90% of the animal life forms on Earth!
But, you know what!? We know how life works, our time is limited and all we do is – be born, feed, recreate and on a fateful day be conferred upon as ‘Prey’! Nevertheless, we are doing our bit maintaining a balance in the ecosystem by feeding, recreating and being fed upon.
When will you play your role? When will you stop destroying our habitats? When will you stop being the reason for climate change? When will you stop.. when will you stop.. when will you!?
