How to get there (in a most memorable and economical manner):
Flight to Delhi -> 45 mins to New Delhi Railway station -> 3 hours Train to Mathura (UP) -> 1 hour Local bus to Bharathpur (RJ) -> 10 mins Auto to Bharathpur Bird Sanctuary
Where to stay:
Best options (proximity to park and cost):
Through ‘rikshawala’. Every morning the forest department draws a lottery to allocate ~150 rikshas for guests, however this can be bypassed if you call a specific rikshawala guide in advance. They typically charge about Rs 100 an hour and if it is for full day (6.30 to 18.30), they charge Rs. 1200. Tips will be appreciated but not a ‘must-do’.
Recommendation: I found Devendar Bharat (rikshawala guide), extremely helpful, with absolute know-how of the park and surroundings as well as knowledge on birding and photography he will always keep you on your toes to ensure not even a minute is wasted. He is extremely cordial and makes you comfortable within minutes of meeting him. He can be reached at +919468887199.
While there is a canteen within the park, you can only get a quick snack and chai (tea). Best option will be to ask the rikshawala to pack breakfast as well as lunch, that would be the best time-saving, tastiest and economical option.
Best time to visit:
January – Maximum birding but limited photography due to fog. Also temperatures could get quite chilly
February – Decent birding and perfect light for photography
